An Indian woman in a red and orange sari sits serenely in the giant, cupped palm of a large green hand, which is made of leaves. The hand rests among lush green foliage, suggesting a scene of harmony between humanity and nature.

What if we wrote the next 1000 years together?

a just and safe trajectory for humanity and all living beings

(first article from the Millennaire 0 blog)

What will we leave behind in 1000 years? Oceans suffocated by plastic, societies fractured by inequality, or a civilization capable of reconciling human flourishing with respect for all life? This question strikes like lightning, between the urgency of our crises and the millennial horizon calling to us.

We are at a crossroads. We can continue to exhaust our resources, fracture our societies and compromise the future. Or we can consider that we are at year zero of a new millennium: one where we consciously choose to bring humanity back within the limits of what is just and safe.

This is precisely the trajectory we want to explore with Millennium 0, a project that rejects perpetual urgency to chart a path that is both visionary and pragmatic, cultural and technical, local and global.

Why think in terms of 1000 years?

Our predecessors left us cathedrals, manuscripts, forests… The builders of Notre-Dame imagined works they would never see completed. But today, we struggle to imagine the next century.

Yet our current actions – in energy, biodiversity, technology – already shape life in one hundred, five hundred or a thousand years. Setting a millennial horizon isn’t about claiming to control everything, but creating a landmark that guides us toward profound sustainability. It’s giving ourselves the time for transformation, where seeds planted today become century-old forests, where local experiments evolve into civilizational models.

Thinking in millennia means refusing the inevitability of decline and moving beyond immediate reaction to design a just, sober and resilient trajectory. Because that’s what it’s about: laying each day a stone for the dike of dignity and care that will protect future generations.

The Alliance Covenant: our circle of commitment

Our compass is inspired by economist Kate Raworth’s “doughnut,” which we have renamed the Alliance Covenant of the Just and Safe. This is our circle of alliance: a moral and practical commitment to all life.

Imagine a space of human prosperity bounded by two circles:

  • “Just”: a social foundation below which no human being should fall
  • “Safe”: an ecological ceiling beyond which we endanger Earth’s balance

This ring is structured around 26 precise indicators that allow us to measure our progress:

9 planetary boundaries to stay within Earth’s safe operating space:

  • Stable climate
  • Terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity preserved
  • Soil integrity
  • Fresh water availability
  • Chemical pollution controlled
  • Clean air
  • Natural nitrogen and phosphorus cycles respected

12 social foundations to guarantee the dignity of every human being:

  • Access to food
  • Access to clean water
  • Housing
  • Energy
  • Education
  • Healthcare
  • Gender equity
  • Decent income
  • Democratic participation
  • Access to justice
  • Territorial equality
  • Peace and security

5 cross-cutting indicators that weave links between social and ecological:

  • Fulfilling and sustainable work
  • Clean air in our living spaces
  • Shared ecological culture
  • Durable and regenerative infrastructure
  • Territorial solidarity in face of crises

The 2025 barometer is unequivocal: climate, biodiversity, and nitrogen cycle are already in critical zones. Territorial equality, decent incomes, and peace remain fragile. We live above the limits of the living world, while leaving millions of people without access to basic needs.

Why “Millennium 0”?

Naming our project Millennium 0 is a strong choice. Zero is not emptiness, but infinite potential. It’s opening a fresh notebook to gather visions, stories, experiences, like a first foundation for a thousand years of human trajectory.

We are at the very beginning. Year 0 of this story. Nothing is written. Everything starts now. Not in 10 years, not in 50 years. Today. We are the generation that chooses to open a thousand years of future.

Our values: the millennium compass

Four values guide our approach like fixed stars in the night. They are both simple and demanding, forming the foundation on which to build the opening millennium:

Human dignity

At the heart of our project, it guides every decision. No trajectory makes sense if it leaves part of humanity behind. Every human being, today and tomorrow, has the right to security, respect and the possibility to flourish.

Chosen sobriety

Replacing “always more” with “living better.” This is accepted and desired sobriety, not imposed, which recognizes the planet’s limits. Not as a constraint, but as a liberating choice that promotes well-being, creativity, connection to life.

Regeneration

Far from mere preservation, this is an active approach. Beyond sustainability that maintains the existing, we aim for regeneration that repairs and enriches. Not only stopping destruction, but repairing, restoring, replanting, reinventing ecosystems and social bonds.

Cultural and technical resilience

Our collective capacity to adapt and thrive in the face of change. Building societies capable of lasting, transmitting and adapting, drawing from the wealth of traditional knowledge and technological innovation.

Our method: charting a living trajectory

Millennium 0 is not just an idea: it’s a living method, organized around seven action verbs that continuously feed each other. This method is both scientific and citizen-based, quantitative and imaginative, to avoid two pitfalls: disembodied utopia and purely accounting management.

1. Conceive

We develop innovative conceptual frameworks that integrate ecological, social and economic challenges into a coherent vision. Our approach relies on interdisciplinary research and systemic understanding of contemporary challenges.

2. Organize

We create agile collaborative structures that enable individuals and communities to engage effectively in transition. Through participatory methods and modern tools, we facilitate the emergence of collectives capable of acting from local to global.

3. Finance

We explore innovative financial mechanisms that align economic interests with environmental and social imperatives. From participatory finance to impact investments, we pave the way for a truly sustainable economy.

4. Realize

We support the implementation of transformative projects that demonstrate the feasibility of our solutions. Our teams work in the field to build, test and deploy pilot initiatives that prefigure tomorrow’s world.

5. Operate

We develop robust operational models that ensure the sustainability of our initiatives. Our approach integrates principles of circular economy, shared governance and continuous improvement.

6. Measure

We rigorously track our 26 concrete indicators, from climate to democracy. A living barometer that allows us to know if we stay within the Ring, celebrate progress and identify alert zones.

7. Transmit

We create content, training and exchange spaces that enable everyone to become an agent of transformation. Through authentic communication, we share our learnings and inspire new change agents.

The power of narratives: why a blog and contests?

Because transition is not just about numbers or technologies. It’s above all a collective story to write. The crises we’re experiencing are not only technical or political challenges – they are narrative crises.

Our blog aims to become a collective imagination hub, where rigorous analyses meet inspiring stories. We will publish concrete experiments, pioneer portraits, deep historical dives, prospective explorations. We will open a permanent dialogue between citizens, institutions, businesses, researchers and artists.

Story contests, in particular, are creative laboratories: what does a living culture mean in 2700, a just economy in 3000, humanity still allied with life in 4000? What if you wrote the story of a society that succeeded in living within the Alliance Ring in 2125? These narratives will explore “bifurcations”: how to exit the red zones, strengthen green areas, avoid critical tipping points? They will inspire our present choices and constitute a library of possible futures.

It’s not about imposing a single vision, but fostering collective intelligence.

The millennium call

We’re not seeking certainties, but a direction, an alliance and a joyful discipline. Perhaps, in a thousand years, our descendants will read these first lines as we today read the carved codes of ancient civilizations. Perhaps they will smile at our clumsiness, our fragile hope. But what will matter is that we began.

Millennium 0 is not a prophecy. It’s an invitation. An invitation to look beyond immediate noise, to build a collective trajectory that is just, safe and inspiring for humanity and all life.

The future is not a place we’re going, but a story we tell. Millennium 0 invites you to become co-author of this story.

So join the circle, take part in the narrative. We are the generation that chooses to open a thousand years of future.

The millennium call begins today. Let’s write humanity’s trajectory for the next 1000 years together.
