“Millenaire 0”: Imagining and Building a Sustainable World for 1,000 Years
What if we finally thought about the very long term—not to fear it, but to inhabit it?
The Millenaire 0 project is a , an invitation to imagine and create a world where humanity has restored balance with its environment, designed to last a thousand years or more—without exceeding planetary boundaries or falling below social foundations.
We call it Millenaire 0 because it inaugurates a new era: one of a sustainable world, conceived to endure for a millennium (millénaire in french). Year zero of a deliberate shift.
This page introduces the Millenaire 0 project and the role of the short story competition in this collective adventure.
The project takes the form of a scientific, narrative, and collaborative exploration. Its goal: to build sustainable, just, and desirable scenarios for the coming millennium—and to make them a reality.
And these scenarios, we weave them with words, data, and stories.
A Compass: The Alliance Covenant
To guide this exploration, we have reimagined Kate Raworth’s Doughnut Economics model under a new name: the . It defines a space where humanity can thrive:
- without exceeding 9 planetary boundaries (climate, biodiversity, water, soil, pollution, biogeochemical cycles, etc.)
- while ensuring 12 social foundations (access to water, health, education, justice, peace, etc.)
- integrating 5 cross-cutting indicators, designed to connect the two circles:
- clean air in our living spaces: indoor air quality, linked to buildings, materials, ventilation, and energy sobriety;
- shared ecological culture: practices, stories, rituals, and languages that enable a society to inhabit the world sustainably;
- fulfilling and sustainable work: human activities compatible with ecosystems and fulfilling for those who perform them;
- durable and regenerative equipment: infrastructures and everyday objects designed to last, be repaired, or serve living systems;
- territorial solidarity in the face of crises: a territory’s capacity to withstand shocks (climatic, social, energetic) without leaving anyone behind.
In total, serve as a shared framework. They form an ethical and systemic governance system.
Project Tools: & Simulator
The Millenaire 0 project relies on two complementary tools to explore and build desirable futures.
Cohérence is a systemic analysis grid used to evaluate each story. It assigns a qualitative score reflecting the text’s alignment with planetary boundaries and social foundations, the feasibility of the imagined transformation, and its human desirability. This score, produced by supervised AI or a jury, helps identify the most transformative stories.
The , currently under development, is an interactive platform that models trajectories of global evolution from 2025 to 3025. It allows users to explore submitted stories as possible bifurcations, cross-reference indicator data, identify systemic tensions or tipping points, and reveal coherent, just, and sustainable paths forward.
Together, these tools fuel the collective dynamic of Millenaire 0: connecting imagination, science, culture, and strategy to create a shared narrative of deep transformation—and to realize it.
A Shared Story to Write
The short story competition fits into both the first and last action verbs of the project: CONCEIVE and TRANSMIT. We believe stories can unlock imagination, place will at the heart of the future, and open paths to the possible. Each story offers a bifurcation, a territory, a step toward this sustainable world.
This is not science fiction. It is a science of fidelity to the Earth.
